3 Days, 3 Quotes; Day 1- True Colors

I would like to thank the very kind Cloud and Sunshine for introducing me to and nominating for The Quote Challenge. It is really fun being a part of this challenge where we get to discover new bloggers.

Day 1 Quote

When people show you who they really are, Believe them the first time.

– Maya Angelou

This is a very famous quote by Maya Angelou, a phenomenal woman of color. Over time i have only come to discover this quote is nothing but true.

What does the quote mean to me?

To me, this quote explains the simple truth of life, people are who they are and nothing speaks louder than actions. Often times, we find ourselves trying to repaint people or convince ourselves they will change or just magically become someone else. This is truly a stressful mission. And in this i find another truth, the only true control you have in this world is over yourself, your actions and your attitude and response towards the life events you encounter.

When people show you who they really are, Believe them the first time.

– Maya Angelou

I have been caught in so many situations where i was point blank shown that the person was no good or was heading a different direction in their life journey but i tried to mould a situation that would’ve been easier left alone. This led to a lot of pain and anger because i expected the other person to be what i wanted them to be. To see the good or the potential i saw in them but they had already shown me it wasn’t what they wanted for themselves. The tricky part is always believing them. But it is rewarding

What did the quote give me?

When I realized that my desire for people to be good to me or to see their own potential was hardly my choice, i started to move different. I once had a good friend who spent so much time disrespecting me in so many ways. Every time i made an excuse for it, the first time, the second and third .. i soon realized this wasn’t going to work for me.

I had spoken to her and advised with different approaches and she spoke of understanding and being apologetic everytime but ran right back to her habits eventually. I finally realized, i cannot make her see what an amazing person she is and how much her habits weren’t doing her any good but i could only control my response to her actions.

I got an amazing sense of freedom from letting go because i could let her live her life how she wanted without stressing myself or her with my opinion or advice. If her disrespect was intolerable, i could only show her i respect her choices but also i could not stick around for it. I realized i could only handle the situation with my reactions towards her behavior and not by changing her choices or actions.

What did I learn from the quote?

I learnt that we, humans, are really beautiful, amazing and diverse creatures. Our lives and ideas of living are so widely spread on an endless spectrum with one thing in common. We are all just trying to find what makes us feel content. Knowing so, i can accept when someone crosses my path but does not align with my ideas on life. It just simply means they are on another journey that i cannot be a part of.

When people show you who they really are, Believe them the first time.

– Maya Angelou

The last thing I’d want to do is try force them to align with my journey because i want them around me. Everything meant to be flows freely and gravitates towards you, not away. It will only hurt me and cause me inner discomfort. I learnt to flow, to accept energies that flow freely with mine and let go of those that conflict my inner peace and don’t freely flow with my own.

Don’t forget to follow the other two quotes.
